The Ontario paramedic community is mourning the sudden death of Dean Popov, a respected emergency medical professional, mentor and leader who died on August 7, 2026. He was 63. His obituary was published August 14 by Kingston-Cataraqui Cremation Services.
Born in Montreal on December 8, 1962, Popov built a career in paramedicine that spanned decades and took him from frontline emergency work to senior leadership and education.
Paramedicine was more than a profession for Popov. According to his obituary, it was his calling, and he remained passionate about the work throughout his career. He began working in Toronto before joining Sunnybrook Base Hospital and later moved into leadership positions with Halton Region Paramedic Services and Frontenac Paramedic Services, serving as deputy chief with both organizations.
Along the way, Popov taught, contributed to research, competed at a high level and mentored generations of paramedics. Colleagues remembered him not only for his extensive knowledge and experience but also for his willingness to share what he knew with others.
Despite his leadership responsibilities, Popov never lost his connection to frontline paramedicine. He continued to enjoy responding to calls and working alongside other medics, according to the published obituary.
Those who knew him described a man who combined professional skill with humor, kindness and a calm presence. He was known for taking an interest in people, including others and making them feel welcome. Many colleagues he mentored eventually became lifelong friends.
Outside his career, Popov was a passionate sports fan, with a particular devotion to the Montreal Canadiens. His love of sports was another part of his personality that connected him with friends and family.
Popov was born to the late Steve (Svetislav) Popov and Olga Popov (Saban). He leaves behind his children, Nicolas and Madelyn, whom he considered his greatest source of pride and joy.
He is also survived by his sister and lifelong friend, Dana Popov-Adamo, and her husband, Steve Adamo, as well as his partner, Julie Desjardins. According to his obituary, Popov and Desjardins had been looking forward to retirement, new adventures and having more time together.
The sudden nature of his death has left a wide circle of family, friends, former colleagues and fellow paramedics grieving. Tributes have painted a consistent picture of Popov as funny, generous, loyal, kind and dependable.
His family and friends are now left with years of memories and stories from the many stages of his life — from his early days in Montreal and Toronto to his work in emergency medicine and leadership across Ontario.
